A new Deliberative Conversation, developed around the theme of “Building Community in Times of Social Unrest”, will be presented online by students of the Spring 2020, Center for Law and Policy Solutions Internship, on Tuesday May 5th, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Registration is required.

The session will feature five interns from three SUNY institutions across the State: Hudson Valley Community College, University at Albany and SUNY Empire. The interns will use diversity, equity, and inclusion to analyze the topics of re-entry of incarcerated peoples into higher education, the impacts of multicultural awareness on learning, and immigration and refugees' access to education. The goal is for participants to examine what it means to engage with others in culturally competent ways, a critical 21st century skill.
The theme of "Building Community in Times of Social Unrest", which was also the focus of the Spring 2020 Virtual Residency offered college-wide at SUNY Empire last February, looks at the impacts of COVID-19, the upcoming Presidential election, and political, cultural and social strife throughout the world.

The Deliberative Conversations program at SUNY Empire, grew out of a partnership between the College’s Division of Student Affairs-Student Life and the Buffalo Project. These
conversations are an effort to increase cultural awareness, interaction and discussion among students, faculty, and staff around difficult topics. The program is a collaborative project between Anita Brown, Development Coordinator at SUNY Empire State College, and moderator Dr. Rhianna C. Rogers, Associate Professor of Anthropology and History and expert on cultural and ethnic studies, intercultural competencies, diversity education, cultural mediation, and virtual implementation.
The uniqueness of the Deliberative Conversations format is that it is meant to intentionally bring together individuals who represent diverse perspectives around a topic; sometimes difficult or controversial, to advocate for tangible, joint solutions that give a voice to all invested in the conversation.
